Danamon Plants Five Thousand Mangrove Trees in Pangandaran Through Danamon Peduli Program

Bandung, October 15, 2023 - As a bank committed to business sustainability and environmental preservation, PT Bank Danamon Indonesia Tbk (Danamon) has actively taken various initiatives to reduce carbon emissions through the Danamon Peduli program.

Through the 2023 Danamon Peduli program, Danamon of West Java Regionthat involve employees as volunteers (D-Volunteers) planted 5,000 mangrove trees and inaugurated the construction of a Mangrove Conservation Center in the Mangrove Forest Area in Karangjaladri village, Parigi district, Pangandaran regency, West Java province.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Saturday, October 14 2023 and was attended by Lt. Col. Inf. Indra Mardianto Subroto, M.I.P, Commander of KODIM 0625/Pangandaran; Drs. Trisno, Head of Environmental Office of Pangandaran Regency;  Marine Lieutenant (T) Junaedi, Commander of the Indonesian Navy Post; Nana Sukrana, S.Ip, Head of Parigi District; AKP Sugiayanto, Head of the Pangandaran Resort Water Police Unit; Pinastika Junia, Regional Corporate Officer of Bank Danamon West Java Region; Berkah Anugrah Bojongsalawe Mangrove Farmers Group, as well as dozens of Danamon volunteers.

“Danamon has a target of planting 30,000 mangrove trees by 2023 as part of our initiative to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment. We chose Pangandaran Bay as one of the planting locations because apart from carrying out conservation efforts, we also hope that these mangroves can be an effort to reduce disaster risk. We thank Pangandaran Regency Government through its Environmental and Cleanliness Service for initiating the Damage Control and Wetland Ecosystem Maintenance program, which involves strategic partners such as farmer groups, fishermen groups, academics, community leaders, the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) and the private sector in the joint efforts to plant and maintain mangroves in the region," said Pinastika Junia, Regional Corporate Officer of Danamon West Java Region.

Learning from the 2006 Pangandaran tsunami disaster, we continue to promote mangrove conservation.  Strong mangrove roots function as a natural barrier that can absorb and reduce tsunami wave energy. On top of that, along with the development of Pangandaran as a tourist destination with a beautiful ecosystem and unique ecology, we also aim to offer economic benefits from mangroves to the local communities.

With these various benefits offered, it comes as no surprise if public interest - including among university students - in conducting research and case studies on mangroves and the surrounding ecosystem is on the rise.  Luckily, the Berkah Anugrah Bojongsalawe Mangrove Farmers Group took the initiative to establish a Mangrove Conservation Center, which will be a center for education and understanding for the community regarding the importance of mangrove forest ecosystems.

"Danamon gladly welcomes this initiative because it is in line with the Corporate Social Responsibility program that we run. This initiative is also a strategic step in protecting the environment and supporting community development and empowerment," explained Pinastika.

With the initiative to plant mangroves and build a conservation center, Danamon hopes that, along with Danamon's strategic partners, we can continue to take active steps in maintaining environmental sustainability and protecting life, especially around Pangandaran Bay.
