Supporting Inclusive Education, Danamon Peduli Brings 13 Reading Corners in the Mentawai Islands

Jakarta, 15 August 2025 – PT Bank Danamon Indonesia Tbk (“Danamon”), through its Danamon Peduli program, has reaffirmed its commitment to community empowerment, with a strong focus on the education sector as part of its support for sustainable development. In its latest initiative, Danamon is partnering with the Tangan Pengharapan Foundation to facilitate the construction of Reading Corners in 13 remote locations in the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra - areas that currently lack access to electricity and mobile networks.

Abdul Hadi, Sustainability Finance Head of Danamon, stated, "We believe that education forms the foundation of sustainable development, and this initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring inclusivity in access to learning resources while empowering future generations. In line with Danamon’s ongoing mission to advance inclusive education, we hope that our support for the establishment of Reading Corners in the Mentawai Islands will serve as a stepping stone toward building a sustainable future for education that is accessible to all."

The Mentawai Islands were selected as the location for this Reading Corner initiative due to the community’s limited access to education, largely caused by geographical isolation. As a background, the lack of reliable electricity and internet connectivity has hindered residents from fully enjoying their right to quality education. Through the establishment of these Reading Corners, Danamon aims to foster a culture of reading and expand the knowledge of local communities. This program is expected to benefit more than 1,100 children across 13 areas in the Mentawai Islands, namely Gotab, Salappa, Sirisurak, Madobag, Ugai, Buttui, Matotonan, Simoilaklak, Gulu-Guluk, Sua, Bolotok, Kaleak, and Tiop.

In implementing this initiative, Danamon is collaborating with the Tangan Pengharapan Foundation. Established in 2007, this foundation operates in the fields of humanitarian work and human empowerment, focusing on education, community development, and health. It was founded with the aim of helping Indonesian communities escape poverty by providing opportunities for them to access education, starting from early childhood education.

Yoanes Kristianus, Chairman of the Tangan Pengharapan Foundation, added, “We are grateful to Danamon for joining us in establishing Reading Corners across 13 locations in the Mentawai Islands. Through this collaboration, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to the well-being of the Mentawai community and support the broader economic development of Indonesia.”

Danamon remains committed to fostering a more equitable and inclusive education ecosystem by investing in capacity-building and supporting the availability of adequate educational facilities and infrastructure. This initiative is in line with Danamon’s broader efforts to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 on Quality Education and SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth. Through Danamon Peduli, Danamon is dedicated to advancing educational equality—an important step toward building a sustainable future for all stakeholders.

Danamon hopes that this initiative in partnership with the Tangan Pengharapan Foundation will create meaningful benefits for the people of the Mentawai Islands. This effort aligns with Danamon’s vision to “Care and Enable Millions to Prosper.” Collaborating alongside its group members and embracing the spirit of Grow Together as One Financial Group, Danamon aims to be a trusted financial partner and continues to respond to customer needs and contribute to Indonesia’s ongoing economic and social advancement.
