Danamon Invites Customers to #JanganKasihCelah Against the Threat of AI Deepfake-Based Fraud
Jakarta, 4 November 2025 - Technological advances have not only made daily life more convenient but have also introduced new challenges. One growing threat today is fraud that exploits artificial intelligence (AI) technology through deepfake techniques capable of realistically imitating a person’s face and voice. As a bank that committed to providing customer-centric financial solutions, PT Bank Danamon Indonesia Tbk (“Danamon”) emphasizes the importance of education through the #JanganKasihCelah campaign to address various forms of cybercrime, including those involving AI technology, and to help customers avoid losses from online fraud.
Andreas Kurniawan, Chief Digital Officer of Danamon, stated; “Danamon views the rise of cyber-based fraud as a serious challenge that must be addressed collectively. Therefore, Danamon is conducting the #JanganKasihCelah educational campaign to raise public awareness and vigilance against various forms of fraud while continuously enhancing understanding of emerging fraud trends. One of the key cybercrimes we are addressing involves the use of AI technology, including deepfake techniques that can deceive customers. The #JanganKasihCelah campaign is part of Danamon’s ongoing efforts to protect customers from potential losses caused by fraud.”
AI technology was originally developed to assist people in their daily activities, such as through the use of generative AI for creative purposes like producing entertainment content and digital art. However, along with the ease of access and advances in technology, many parties have begun misusing it for cybercrime. Among these, fraudsters employ deepfake techniques, a video and audio manipulation methods capable of imitating a person’s facial features and voice with such realism that they are difficult to distinguish from the real individuals, allowing criminals to deceive victims into disclosing confidential personal data such as OTP codes, CVV / CVC codes, PINs, and the expiration dates of Danamon Debit / Credit / Charge cards. The modus operandi of this crime often involves making voice or video calls to customers while impersonating bank officials, using appearances and voices that seem authentic and convincing.
According to the Artificial Intelligence Governance for Indonesian Banking report by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), cases of fraud involving deepfake techniques have increased in line with the growing capabilities and accessibility of generative AI. It was also noted that between the first quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, there was a 223% increase in the trading of deepfake creation tools on dark web forums. This demonstrates that the technology is becoming increasingly accessible to cybercriminals and can be used with little risk of detection. These threats affect not only individual customers or businesses but can also undermine public trust in the financial system as a whole.
“Currently, many people are using AI technology for beneficial purposes. At the same time, cybercriminals are exploiting AI to profit from illegal activities, such as deploying deepfake techniques to deceive victims. Those unaware of such crimes can easily be contacted, misled, and persuaded to share confidential information, which can then be misused for harmful purposes. Therefore, it is crucial for the public to recognize the tactics that fraudsters may use, and to always avoid sharing OTP codes, CVV / CVC codes, PINs, and the expiration dates of their Danamon Debit / Credit / Charge cards with unverified parties, including those claiming to be bank representatives,” added Andreas.
The perpetrator may pretend as family members in emergency situations needing financial help, impersonate celebrities to offer fake prizes, or as bank officers requesting confidential personal information. All in an effort to deceive and defraud their targets. With voices and faces nearly indistinguishable from the real individuals, victims are often misled into disclosing sensitive information, which is then exploited to conduct illegal transactions.
Through the #JanganKasihCelah educational campaign, Danamon reminds customers to remain vigilant and verify every call or request for information they receive. To avoid falling victim to fraud using deepfake techniques, customers are advised to verify the phone number of incoming calls and ignore suspicious or unknown numbers; pay close attention to the caller’s voice and disregard the call if the intonation seems flat or unnatural; observe the caller’s facial expressions, as deepfake technology often results in unsynchronized lip movements or unnatural expressions, such as infrequent blinking; and be vigilant by rejecting requests for funds or personal information from anyone, even if they appear convincing.
If a Danamon customer suspects they have been victimized or have disclosed confidential information to an unauthorized party, customers are advised to promptly change their banking account password and PIN. In addition, customers can temporarily or permanently block their transaction cards through the D-Bank PRO application or contact the Hello Danamon service at 1-500-090 for domestic assistance and +62-21-23546100 for abroad assistance. This prompt response is critical to prevent further financial losses and safeguard your account security.
